Photography Tip by Lalit Deshmukh: [ PRINTING A PHOTO – 1 ]
I have 8 megapixel camera. Whats the biggest size image I can have? I want to hang it on the wall. Hmm…. 8 mp.

If I want pretty good quality image, I would ask the Printer to print at 300 dpi or dots per inch. Which is pretty good and used mainly in the books, magazines or alike. Well, I think that would do for me. Magazine quality is ok with me.

8 mp cameras have resolution of 3264 by 2448 (3×2 aspect ratio – 3 parts for the length and 2 for the height)

Wokay.. so lets see…

3264 pixels/300dpi = 10.88 inches

2448/300 = 8.16 inches

so roughly 8×12 is what you can print at a very good quality.

But for walls, even 200 dpi would do. We don’t need a finest resolution for the wall prints. ’cause we don’t really see wall print from 6 inches…do we?

May be one meter or two right?

200dpi or 300 dpi from 2 meters doesn’t make much difference for the average viewer.

So…. lets see…

for length its 3264 pixels / 200 dpi = 16.32 inches

for height 2448 / 200 = 12.24 inches

so 12 x 16 inches you can also print, with a fairly good quality

Go for it

Lalit, it would be useful to write about “re-sizing” and printing in general.
